Sacred Heart Model School is the first Catholic and private school in Kentucky to achieve certification as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) Levels 6-8.

Sacred Heart Academy is excited to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) to our 9th and 10th grade.

IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11-16. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. Students explore the themes of identities and relationships, personal and cultural expression, orientation in space and time, scientific and technical innovation, fairness and development, and globalization and sustainability.

The framework emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. Classrooms are student-centered and inquiry-based with a focus on conceptual understanding for transfer of knowledge. So, instead of focusing on the “what,” we focus on the “why.” Twenty-first century skill development is also part of the MYP framework, so our teachers are deliberately teaching and assessing communication, thinking, research, self-management and social skills –essentials for the 21st century learner. Assessments are authentic, real-world opportunities for students to demonstrate the mastery of skills and the ability to transfer what they have learned to new and unique situations.

The culmination of the MYP is an independent Personal Project that all students complete. In collaboration with our Jean Frazier Leadership Institute, students have a capstone experience that showcases their communication, research, self-management and critical thinking skills.

Only schools authorized by the International Baccalaureate can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the IB Career-related Certificate (IBCC).
