SHMS at a Glance

For more than 90 years, Sacred Heart Model School has offered the best in education to our students and their families. That means a supportive environment, outstanding faculty and the latest technology. Unique opportunities inside and outside the classroom help students grow from Learners to Leaders.

Sacred Heart Model School is a private, Catholic, co-ed K-8 school with an enrollment of nearly 350. As one of four members of Sacred Heart Schools, SHMS is located on the Ursuline Campus in Crescent Hill and is sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville.

SHMS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The Model School is the only Catholic and private school in Kentucky authorized as an IB Middle Years Programme school for grades 6-8. The IB program has a reputation of maintaining high academic standards, offering students the skills they need to be life-long learners in a globalized world.

SHMS offers small class sizes and a student to teacher ratio of 9:1. Differentiated instruction, expansive arts offerings and concentration on world language development set the Model School apart.

The faculty is made up of 45 teachers, counselors, and administrators averaging approximately 15 years in the education field.

SHMS students come from 33 zip codes in Louisville, surrounding counties, and southern Indiana.

SHMS is a Catholic school but all faiths are welcomed. Half of our students identify as non-Catholic and 20% identify themselves as a student of color.

SHMS has a 1:1 iPad program for grades 6-8. Our younger students have access daily to iPad, laptop and desktop computers. Our technology curriculum from grades K-8 school equips each student with the skills they need to transition into high school.

The SHMS athletic program has earned city championships in numerous sports, including swimming, cross country, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, soccer and tennis. On-campus athletic facilities include a gymnasium, tennis courts, a regulation track, two natural grass fields and one synthetic turf field. Our program suits up more than two dozen teams in 13 sports.

The Ursuline Arts Center (UAC) on campus provides students with a modern facility in which to develop their artistic talents. It houses our music classroom as well as a theatre that seats more than 500. UAC features include an orchestra pit, scene/prop shop and costume storage, wheelchair seating and a spacious atrium. SHMS students use the theatre on a regular basis for music events, student talent show, drama, student council meetings and awards day.

SHMS is one of four campus schools that make up Sacred Heart Schools. The presence of Sacred Heart Preschool (ages 1-5), Sacred Heart Academy (girls high school) and Sacred Heart School for the Arts (all ages) allows for unique opportunities and shared activities throughout the year.

SHMS faculty, staff, and students strive to live out the Ursuline Core Values of community, reverence, service, and leadership daily.
