International Baccalaureate Programme (IB)
Sacred Heart Academy first achieved International Baccalaureate (IB) World School status in 1997 and continues the tradition of excellence today. As one of only two schools in the city and the only Catholic school in the state to offer IB, juniors and seniors at SHA can take advantage of a unique honors program based on international standards and practices. IB is a rigorous college preparatory program that aims to develop internationally minded citizens and educate the whole person through a comprehensive curriculum. It is infused with globalism to prepare students to compete, succeed, and lead in an increasingly interdependent world. There are more than 3,700 IB world schools in 147 countries with nearly 800 high schools in the U.S. offering the Diploma Programme.
As an International Baccalaureate World School, we encourage all students to be IB learners. At Sacred Heart Academy all of our students, regardless of participation in the IB Programme, will be encouraged to develop the following attributes of an IB learner:
Students who successfully complete the full honors program their freshman and sophomore years are eligible to become an IB Diploma Candidate junior year. Approximately 10-15% of students in each class pursue the IB Diploma while 50% take at least one IB Certificate course. While IB courses are very challenging, IB students are fully engaged in school life. They are involved in sports, clubs, performing arts, and take on leadership roles.
